Average Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) by Industry: 2026 Small Business Report

June 15, 2026

Last Updated: June 15th, 2026

From November 2025 to May 2026, our research team tracked customer acquisition cost data across 1,600 small business client accounts, calculating CAC as total marketing and sales investment divided by total new customers acquired, recorded in Google Analytics GA4.

For small businesses, the average customer acquisition cost is $250, though that figure varies significantly depending on the industry, the marketing channels being used, and how competitive the local market is. A financial advisor or mortgage broker can expect to pay $750 or more to acquire a new client, while a restaurant owner or pet grooming business typically acquires customers for under $60.

Customer acquisition cost is calculated by dividing your total sales and marketing investment by the number of new customers acquired during the same period:

The data reveals two distinct CAC tiers across small business industries. High-ticket professional and advisory services, including financial planning, mortgage brokerage, real estate, and legal, carry the highest acquisition costs because their customers require extended trust-building, multiple touchpoints, and often a referral from a known source before committing. These industries generate fewer total customers per year but at significantly higher lifetime value per client, which justifies the elevated acquisition investment. Service businesses at the lower end of the table, including restaurants, pet services, appliance repair, and beauty, benefit from high local search intent, short decision cycles, and strong word-of-mouth dynamics that bring acquisition costs down naturally.

The Highest Customer Acquisition Cost Industries for Small Businesses

The table below identifies the six small business industries with the highest average customer acquisition costs, alongside the primary driver of elevated costs in each category.

Industry Avg. CAC Range Primary Driver of High CAC
Financial & Wealth Management $850 $620-$1,100 High-stakes, long-consideration decisions require multiple touchpoints; competitive paid search market drives up acquisition costs across all channels
Mortgage & Lending (Brokers) $760 $550-$980 Rate-comparison behavior prolongs the decision cycle; real estate referral partnerships add cost; compliance constraints limit creative acquisition tactics
Real Estate $620 $440-$820 National platforms like Zillow and Realtor.com command large referral fees; long research cycles and high transaction stakes require sustained relationship investment before a client commits
Legal Services $520 $380-$690 Personal injury and criminal defense keywords carry some of the highest paid search CPCs in any industry; trust and specialization requirements limit how quickly a prospect converts
Insurance (Independent Agents) $440 $310-$580 Independent agents compete directly against national carriers with large digital marketing budgets; lead generation platform fees inflate blended acquisition cost
Dental & Orthodontics $380 $265-$520 New patient acquisition in competitive urban and suburban markets requires consistent investment in both paid and organic channels; orthodontic cases carry longer consideration periods than general dentistry

The data reveals that the highest-CAC industries for small businesses are defined by two compounding factors: high advertiser competition and extended customer trust cycles. In each of these categories, the client’s decision carries significant financial, legal, or health consequences, which means the path from first awareness to commitment is longer and requires more consistent marketing presence to traverse. Small businesses in these industries that invest in referral systems, local authority content, and review management alongside paid acquisition consistently lower their effective CAC over time by reducing dependence on channels where competitor spending inflates costs.

The Lowest Customer Acquisition Cost Industries for Small Businesses

The table below identifies the six small business industries with the lowest average customer acquisition costs, alongside the primary factor keeping acquisition costs low in each category.

Industry Avg. CAC Range Primary Driver of Low CAC
Restaurants & Food Service $32 $20-$45 High social referral volume, repeat customer behavior, and Google Business Profile-driven discovery keep acquisition costs minimal; most new customers come from existing customer recommendations
Pet Services (Grooming, Boarding) $55 $36-$74 Strong repeat customer loyalty limits the volume of new customer acquisition needed; word-of-mouth referrals from pet owner communities drive low-cost organic discovery
Appliance Repair $62 $42-$84 Emergency intent produces fast, high-intent conversions from organic and Google Business Profile channels; the short decision window means fewer touchpoints required before a customer commits
Beauty & Personal Care $68 $46-$92 Social referral dynamics and appointment-based loyalty reduce the need for aggressive paid acquisition; satisfied customers regularly refer friends and family at scale
Car Detailing $72 $48-$96 Low local keyword competition and high Google Business Profile conversion rates produce customers at minimal cost; referrals from detailing communities compound over time
Pest Control $82 $56-$110 High urgency searches convert at very high rates from paid and organic channels; the short path from problem identification to service booking keeps the total acquisition cost low

The data reveals that the lowest-CAC small businesses share one defining characteristic: their customers arrive already decided. Whether through a Google Business Profile search, a friend’s referral, or an emergency need, the visitor requires minimal persuasion before booking or calling. These businesses benefit from acquisition economics that improve over time as their reputation compounds within a local area. For small businesses in these categories, investing in Google Business Profile optimization, a consistent review acquisition strategy, and a simple referral incentive program produces the highest return on CAC reduction effort.

Average Customer Acquisition Cost by Marketing Channel

The channel a small business uses to acquire customers has as much impact on CAC as the industry it operates in. The table below presents the average customer acquisition cost by marketing channel for small businesses, sorted from lowest to highest.

Channel Avg. CAC Range Close Rate Best-Fit Industries
Referral / Word of Mouth $18 $10-$28 Very High All local service industries
Google Business Profile $52 $35-$72 Very High Restaurants, home services, dental, beauty
Email Marketing (existing list) $58 $38-$82 High Professional services, fitness, e-commerce
Google Local Services Ads $95 $62-$132 High Home services, legal, healthcare
SMS / Text Marketing $98 $65-$138 High Restaurants, beauty, fitness, retail
Organic SEO $142 $92-$198 Medium-High All local industries
Yelp / Local Directories $158 $104-$218 Medium-High Home services, restaurants, legal
Retargeting / Remarketing $185 $122-$255 Medium-High E-commerce, professional services
Content Marketing $195 $128-$268 Medium Professional services, financial, healthcare
Social Media Ads (Facebook / Instagram) $242 $158-$332 Medium E-commerce, beauty, fitness, restaurants
TikTok Ads $265 $172-$362 Medium Beauty, restaurants, fitness, retail
Google Search Ads $312 $205-$428 Medium-High Legal, home services, healthcare
Direct Mail $388 $252-$532 Low-Medium Home services, dental, real estate
Display Advertising $445 $290-$612 Low Brand awareness, retargeting audiences
YouTube Ads $492 $320-$675 Low-Medium Education, home improvement

The data reveals a clear divide between relationship-driven and intent-driven channels at the low end, and awareness-based paid channels at the high end. Referrals and Google Business Profile produce the lowest CAC for small businesses because both sources deliver customers who are already predisposed to trust the business before making contact. Organic SEO sits in the mid-range but is the only channel in the table whose CAC decreases over time as authority compounds, making it the strongest long-term channel investment for most local businesses. For businesses in the highest-CAC industries like legal and financial services, Google Search Ads remain a necessary channel despite their cost because the high lifetime value of each client justifies the acquisition investment. Businesses that build referral systems and organic SEO as their primary channels and use paid acquisition selectively to fill gaps consistently achieve the lowest blended CAC over time.

Average Customer Acquisition Cost by Year: 2023-2026

Customer acquisition costs for small businesses have risen consistently across all four years as digital advertising competition increased and organic channels required greater investment to maintain performance. The table below tracks average small business CAC from 2023 through 2026.

Year Avg. Small Business CAC Range Primary Driver of Cost Change
2023 $188 $18-$680 Post-pandemic digital acceleration drove small businesses into paid channels for the first time at scale, increasing competition and baseline acquisition costs across industries
2024 $212 $20-$740 Rising Google Ads CPCs and Meta ad costs pushed blended CAC higher; referral and organic programs grew in adoption as cost offsets
2025 $232 $22-$800 AI-generated content flooded organic search, requiring greater content investment to maintain SEO-driven acquisition efficiency
2026 $250 $24-$850 Generative engine optimization added new investment requirements; paid channel costs continued rising while organic CAC held relatively stable for businesses with established authority

The data reveals a 33% increase in average small business CAC from 2023 to 2026, driven primarily by rising paid advertising costs rather than increases in organic acquisition cost. Businesses that built strong referral systems and SEO authority during 2023 and 2024 are experiencing relatively stable CAC in 2026 because their organic and word-of-mouth acquisition costs have remained consistent, even as paid channel costs continued to climb. The businesses seeing the steepest CAC increases are those that remained dependent on paid acquisition without building parallel organic and referral channels during the period when those foundations were less expensive to establish.
