How Much Does SEO Cost for a Small Business in 2026? Pricing and Packages

August 3, 2026

Bar chart of estimated monthly SEO cost for small businesses by industry, from $900-$1,850 for restaurants to $2,000-$4,050 for legal services.

From March to September 2026, our research team analyzed published SEO pricing data from GoodFirms and Ahrefs (including Ahrefs’ August 2026 survey update) and Google Ads competition benchmarks from WordStream, then checked WebFX’s pricing ranges against its October 2026 update. We do not use private client data, and the method behind every calculated table is shown next to it.

What does it cost a small business to get SEO, and what does each budget level buy?

This report breaks down SEO cost by service category (15 industries), business size, pricing model and provider type.

Most small businesses pay between $1,500 and $3,000 per month for SEO in 2026, and most businesses overall spend between $500 and $5,000 per month, according to pricing surveys from GoodFirms and Ahrefs. The cost varies significantly by business type. Our analysis found that legal services carry the highest expected SEO cost, about $2,000-$4,050 per month, because attorney keywords are the most expensive in search. Restaurants carry the lowest, about $900-$1,850 per month, because local food searches face far less competition.

How Much Does SEO Cost for Small Businesses: Industry Breakdown

How we calculated this. We started with the $1,500-$3,000 small business SEO range reported by GoodFirms (2026). For each industry, we divided its average Google Ads cost per click by the all-industry average of $5.42 from WordStream’s 2026 benchmarks to get a competition index. We then multiplied the base range by the square root of that index, which dampens the effect because organic SEO labor does not scale one-to-one with ad auction prices, and rounded to the nearest $50. Industries were mapped to the closest WordStream category. Treat the results as planning estimates, not quotes.

Our analysis found that SEO cost is driven primarily by how many competitors are paying to win the same searches. Industries at the lower end, including restaurants, pet services and real estate, have cheaper clicks, which signals that a well-optimized Google Business Profile and a small number of service pages can compete without heavy link building. Industries at the higher end, including legal, home services and dental, face the most expensive keywords in search, so ranking requires more content, stronger link profiles and more consistent work.

One finding that differs from common assumptions: finance and insurance clicks average only $3.39 in WordStream’s 2026 data, below the all-industry average. Those businesses still face strict content quality standards for financial topics, so we recommend budgeting toward the top of the estimated range.

SEO Cost by Pricing Model: 2026

Most SEO providers price their work in one of three ways. The table below shows the published ranges for each model and when each one makes sense.

Pricing ModelTypical CostBest For
Monthly retainer$1,000-$5,000 per monthOngoing strategy, content, technical work and reporting
Hourly consulting$75-$200 per hourAdvice for an in-house team or a one-off question
Project-based$500-$5,000 per projectAudits, site migrations, one-time fixes

Retainers are the most common model by far: 78.2% of SEO providers charge a monthly retainer, according to Ahrefs. The most popular retainer band is $501-$1,000 per month, which is typically a starter scope rather than a full program for a competitive market.

SEO Cost by Provider Type: 2026

Local SEO (all providers)

The data reveals that agencies charge 138% more than freelancers on average, according to Ahrefs. That gap mostly pays for capacity: a team can produce content, fix technical issues and build links in the same month, while a solo freelancer usually has to sequence that work. Local campaigns cost less than half as much as national ones because the competitive set is smaller.

SEO Cost by Business Size

SEO investment requirements shift significantly as a business grows. A new business with no online presence needs a different strategy than an established business defending competitive rankings. The table below shows published ranges by business size.

Business SizeMonthly SEO CostPrimary SEO Focus
Startup / micro business$500-$1,500Foundation: Google Business Profile, technical audit, local citations, first service pages
Small business$1,500-$3,500Authority building: consistent content, link building, review growth
Mid-sized business$1,500-$10,000Competitive expansion: more keywords, digital PR, multi-page optimization
Large business$5,000-$20,000Multi-market and multi-location SEO, advanced technical work

New businesses are best served by a focused, lower-investment approach that prioritizes Google Business Profile optimization, technical site health and a small number of high-intent service pages. As organic traffic begins generating consistent leads, expanding the content program and link building produces compounding returns. WebFX notes that SEO typically takes 3-6 months to show meaningful results.

Red Flags in Cheap SEO Quotes

  • Guaranteed rankings or a promised number one position.
  • No written scope of monthly deliverables.
  • You do not own the content, Google Business Profile or analytics accounts.
  • Link packages sold by volume, such as hundreds of links per month.
  • Long lock-in contracts before any audit or plan is delivered.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should a small business spend on SEO per month?

Most small businesses spend $1,500-$3,000 per month (GoodFirms, 2026). Businesses in low-competition local markets can often start below $1,000, while legal, dental and home service businesses usually need to budget at the top of the range.

Is $500 a month enough for SEO?

It can cover foundational local work, such as Google Business Profile optimization and citations, in a low-competition market. It is rarely enough to rank in a competitive industry or city.

How long does SEO take to work?

WebFX reports that SEO typically takes 3-6 months to show meaningful results, with larger gains often appearing within 12 months.

Does SEO cost include AI search optimization?

It increasingly does. Many providers now bundle generative engine optimization (GEO) into higher-tier plans. Ask any provider to show exactly what AI search work is in scope.
