Last Updated: June 29th, 2026
Our research team compiled referral traffic data from three sources to estimate AI platform performance as of April 2026: Goodie’s AI Search Market Share Report, covering 41 brand sites and 2.8 million AI referral sessions; Pressonify’s AI Platform Comparison Report; and data across 1,600 small businesses. Because each source used a different methodology for tracking referral traffic, we normalized figures across sources using a weighted average. The sections below cover AI referral traffic share by platform, traffic volume and quality, monthly active user growth, and a GEO prioritization framework for small businesses.
AI Referral Traffic Growth: 2023-2026
In the chart and table below, we have published the total monthly AI referral visits from 2023 through May 2026. AI referral traffic grew 357% in the twelve months to June 2025 alone, reaching 1.13 billion monthly visits, and has continued to accelerate as new platforms and use cases expand the channel.
| Period | Monthly AI Referral Visits | YoY Growth |
|---|---|---|
| Jun 2023 | 68,000,000 | Baseline |
| Jun 2024 | 247,000,000 | +263% |
| Jun 2025 | 1,130,000,000 | +357% |
| May 2026 | 2,100,000,000 (est.) | +86% |
AI Platform Referral Traffic Share: 2025 vs. 2026
In the table below, we have published the AI referral traffic share for each major platform, comparing figures from May through August 2025 against March through April 2026. While ChatGPT still holds the largest share by a wide margin, its position declined by 28 percentage points in less than a year as Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity each captured meaningful ground.
| Platform | Referral Traffic Share (Wave 1: May–Aug 2025) | Referral Traffic Share (Wave 2: Mar–Apr 2026) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 89.1% | 60.8% | -28.3 percentage points |
| ClaudeAI | 1.4% | 18.0% | +16.6 percentage points |
| Google Gemini | 2.4% | 10.3% | +7.9 percentage points |
| Perplexity | 3.1% | 7.1% | +4.0 percentage points |
| Microsoft Copilot | 3.2% | 3.9% | +0.7 percentage points |
AI Platform Traffic Volume and Quality: 2026
In the table below, we have published the monthly active user count, referral traffic share, and referral punch factor for each major AI platform. Of the five platforms tracked, Perplexity generates 3.8 times more referral traffic per visit than the average platform, making it the most efficient driver of outbound clicks despite holding just 7.1% of total AI referral traffic.
| Platform | Monthly Active Users | Share of AI Referral Traffic | Referral Punch Factor | Key Traffic Characteristic |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 899,000,000 | 60.8% | 1.0x (average) | High volume, broad audience, 15.9% average conversion rate |
| Google Gemini | 750,000,000 | 10.3% | 0.8x (below average) | Workplace assistant behavior, integrated Google ecosystem signals |
| Microsoft Copilot | 500,000,000 | 3.9% | 0.8x (below average) | Enterprise task completion focus, lives inside Microsoft 365, not source exploration |
| ClaudeAI | 220,000,000 (est.) | 18.0% | 0.9x (near average) | Research-stage queries, high click-out rate, skews technical and knowledge-worker audience |
| Perplexity | 100,000,000 | 7.1% | 3.8x (well above average) | Citation-first by design, highest per-visit referral rate of all major platforms |
AI Platform Monthly Active Users: 2026
In the table below, we have published the monthly active user counts for each major AI platform in 2025 and 2026. While ChatGPT and Gemini lead in total users by a significant margin, Perplexity and ClaudeAI are growing at rates that far outpace the established platforms, with Perplexity up 243% and ClaudeAI up 173% year-over-year.
| Platform | Monthly Active Users (2025) | Monthly Active Users (2026) | YoY Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 723,000,000 | 899,000,000 | +24% |
| Google Gemini | 652,000,000 | 750,000,000 | +15% |
| Microsoft Copilot | 463,000,000 | 500,000,000 | +8% |
| ClaudeAI (est.) | 81,000,000 | 220,000,000 | +173% |
| Perplexity | 29,000,000 | 100,000,000 | +243% |
AI Referral Traffic vs. Traditional Google Search: 2026
In the table below, we have published a side-by-side comparison of AI platform referral traffic and traditional Google organic search across four key metrics. While AI referral traffic represents just 1% of total web traffic today, it converts at nearly nine times the rate of Google organic and is the only major traffic channel growing year-over-year.
| Metric | Google Organic Search | AI Platform Referral |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly visits (global) | ~180 billion | ~2.1 billion |
| Share of total web traffic | ~27% | ~1% |
| Average conversion rate | 1.76% | 15.9% |
| YoY traffic trend | -2.5% | +86% |
GEO Priority by Platform for Small Businesses: 2026
In the table below, we have published a GEO prioritization framework for each major AI platform, including the primary optimization signal and typical time to first visibility. Google AI Overview and ChatGPT rank as the two highest-priority platforms for most small businesses, though Perplexity offers the fastest path to initial visibility of any platform at 24 to 72 hours.
| Platform | GEO Priority | Primary Optimization Signal | Key Content Type | Time to First Visibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overview | Critical | GBP completeness, E-E-A-T, existing Google ranking | Structured Q&A content, FAQs, schema markup | 2 to 6 weeks |
| ChatGPT | Very High | Website structure, Bing indexing, brand authority | Informational content, citations, Wikipedia presence | 4 to 10 weeks |
| ClaudeAI | Very High | Website authority, brand mentions, structured content | Research content, authoritative sourcing | 6 to 12 weeks |
| Google Gemini | High | Google ecosystem signals, GBP, diversified content | Blog content, community discussions, diverse sources | 3 to 8 weeks |
| Perplexity | High | Fresh content, real-time indexing, citation quality | Updated content, press releases, news coverage | 24 to 72 hours |
| Microsoft Copilot | Medium | Bing Places, Bing indexing, Microsoft ecosystem | Website content, local business listings | 4 to 8 weeks |
Key Takeaways
The data across all six sections points to the same conclusion: AI referral traffic is no longer a single-platform channel. A GEO strategy built around ChatGPT alone now misses nearly 40% of the landscape. Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity together account for 35% of all AI referral traffic as of April 2026, up from just 9% eight months ago.
Of the five platforms tracked, Perplexity stands out as the highest-efficiency traffic driver relative to its size, generating 3.8 times more referral clicks per visit than the average platform. ClaudeAI, despite being the least discussed in small business marketing circles, now holds 18% of AI referral traffic and is growing faster in absolute user terms than any other platform. Both warrant dedicated attention in any 2026 GEO strategy.
For most small businesses, the right starting point is Google AI Overview and ChatGPT as the primary focus, Gemini and ClaudeAI as secondary targets, and Perplexity as the platform to prioritize for businesses that publish regular content and want the fastest path to initial AI search visibility.
