Gym Trial-to-Member Conversion Rate: 2026 Benchmarks

October 5, 2026

From May to September 2026, our research team studied how often a completed gym trial, intro offer, or membership tour turns into a paying membership across 12 gym types. We compiled data from 13 sources, including sales funnel studies, platform benchmarks, and intro-offer conversion data. We then applied each published format benchmark to the gym types it covers.

This report answers how often a completed trial turns into a paying membership, and how that rate changes by gym type, trial type, and funnel stage. In the sections below, we break down each of those benchmarks.

Average Gym Trial-to-Member Conversion Rate by Gym Type: 2026

The table below breaks down the average share of completed trials, intros, tours, or attended intro visits that become paying memberships across 12 gym types. The Rate Basis column shows the published format benchmark behind each rate, since several gym types share one format-level figure.

Gym Type Trial-to-Member Rate
Traditional gyms and health clubs 75%
Martial arts schools 73%
Brazilian jiu-jitsu and MMA gyms 73%
Boxing and kickboxing gyms 73%
Boutique fitness gyms 65%
HIIT and bootcamp studios 65%
CrossFit boxes 48%
Functional fitness and small-group training gyms 48%
Pilates studios 47%
Yoga studios 47%
Barre studios 47%
Indoor cycling studios 47%

The data reveals that gyms that close after one short visit convert best, while formats that sell through a multi-session intro pack convert more slowly. Traditional clubs and combat sports schools usually decide the same day. Boutique, HIIT, and bootcamp gyms sit in the middle when they follow the intro with a clear sales conversation. CrossFit and class-based studios take longer because the membership choice often spans several visits. Where a type does not have its own published rate, the Rate Basis column shows which format benchmark we applied.

Average Gym Trial-to-Member Conversion Rate by Trial Type: 2026

The table below breaks down show-up rates and trial-to-member conversion rates for free trials versus paid intro offers.

Trial Type Show-up Rate Trial-to-Member Rate
Free trial 58% 38%
Paid intro offer 90% 70%

The data reveals that a paid intro offer converts nearly twice as often as a free trial once someone finishes the visit, and it also brings a much higher show-up rate before that visit even starts. A prospect who has already paid a small intro fee filters out tire-kickers and arrives with purchase intent, which is why the membership conversation at the end lands more often. Free trials still drive more opt-ins at the top of the funnel, so the volume-versus-conversion tradeoff is the real choice for most gyms, not a single best offer.

Average Gym Trial-to-Member Conversion Rate by Funnel Stage: 2026

The table below breaks down the paid-lead path at traditional gyms and health clubs, from a digital inquiry through a booked visit, an attended visit, and a signed membership, along with the share of paid leads that become members end to end.

Funnel Stage Conversion Rate
Paid lead to booked tour or trial 8%
Booked visit to attended visit 75%
Attended visit to member 75%
Paid lead to member (end-to-end) 4.5%

The data reveals that the attended-visit close rate of 75% is strong, yet only about 4.5 of every 100 paid leads become members because so few leads ever book or show up. Improving the booking and show-up stages multiplies output from the same ad spend without raising cost per lead. That is why trial-to-member conversion and the earlier funnel steps have to be read together when a gym judges whether its customer acquisition cost is healthy.
