From January through May 2026, our research team at Altus Marketing analyzed pricing data from more than 400 local SEO proposals and cross-referenced findings with pricing surveys from WebFX and SEOProfy covering more than 250 businesses. Our methodology weighted proposals by market size, provider type, and campaign scope to produce the figures below.
Local SEO costs between $500 and $3,000 per month for most small businesses in 2026. One-time audits and setup projects range from $500 to $5,000. Hourly consulting rates run from $75 to $200 per hour. Below $500 per month, the scope of work is typically too narrow to produce meaningful results in any competitive market. Above $3,000 per month, a single-location business is likely paying for services designed for multi-location or enterprise campaigns.
Local SEO Cost by Industry: 2026
Local SEO pricing varies significantly by industry because the competition level determines how much work is required to rank. The table below shows typical monthly investment ranges across 36 small business industries, sorted from highest to lowest investment.

| Wedding Services | $300 to $600 | Low | GBP optimization, portfolio content, review management |
| Photography & Creative Services | $300 to $600 | Low | GBP optimization, portfolio content, local citations |
The data reveals that local SEO costs vary by as much as 8 to 1 across industries, with legal services at the top ($2,500 to $5,000 per month) and photography at the bottom ($300 to $600 per month), driven almost entirely by the number of competing businesses targeting the same local keywords. Industries with very high competition levels require active content creation, local link building, and aggressive review strategies to rank, while low-competition industries can achieve meaningful visibility with GBP optimization and citation building alone. Emergency intent industries such as home services, roofing, appliance repair, and pest control fall in the moderate to high range despite not being the highest-value industries, because the urgency of those searches drives extremely high competition for the top local positions.
Local SEO Monthly Cost by Service Tier: 2026
Most local SEO agencies structure pricing around four service tiers. The chart and table below show the typical monthly cost range for each tier and what is included at each level as of 2026.
| Service Tier | Monthly Cost | What Is Included | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $300 to $500 | GBP optimization, citation building on 3 to 10 directories, monthly ranking report | Single-location businesses in low-competition markets starting from zero |
| Standard | $500 to $1,500 | Basic + local content creation (1 to 2 pieces per month), review monitoring, citation building on 20+ directories | Single-location businesses in moderate-competition markets |
| Comprehensive | $1,500 to $3,000 | Standard + competitor analysis, monthly strategy calls, local link building, advanced reporting | Single-location businesses in high-competition markets |
| Multi-Location | $3,000 to $5,000+ | Comprehensive + per-location GBP management, dedicated account manager, location-specific reporting | Businesses with 2 or more locations |
The data reveals that the most significant quality gap in local SEO services occurs at the $500 per month threshold. Below that floor, most providers focus exclusively on one-time GBP setup and citation tasks that produce early visibility gains but plateau within three to six months as no new content is created and citations go unmanaged. The $1,000 to $1,500 range represents the most common investment for a single-location small business seeking consistent results in a moderate-competition market, and also the range where quality varies most significantly between providers.
Local SEO Cost by Provider Type: 2026
Who you hire for local SEO is as important as what you spend. The chart and table below compare the five most common local SEO provider types by typical monthly cost range, strengths, and limitations.
| Provider Type | Monthly Cost | Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local or regional agency | $500 to $3,000 | Knows local market, dedicated team, consistent monthly output | Quality varies significantly by agency |
| National agency | $1,000 to $5,000 | Established processes, broader resources, proven track record | Less local market knowledge, higher overhead costs |
| Freelance consultant | $300 to $2,000 | Flexible scope, direct access, often lower cost | Limited capacity, single point of failure, variable availability |
| In-house hire | $4,000 to $8,000 | Full-time focus, deep brand knowledge, fastest turnaround | High true cost when benefits and management overhead are included |
| DIY (tools only) | $100 to $500 | Lowest out-of-pocket cost | Time-intensive, skill-dependent, results limited by expertise |
The data reveals that regional and local agencies represent the best value for most small businesses, combining local market knowledge with dedicated team capacity at a price point freelancers often cannot match in terms of consistent monthly output. In-house hiring delivers strong results but carries a true cost of $4,000 to $8,000 per month when benefits, recruiting, and management overhead are factored in, making it difficult to justify for businesses spending under $100,000 per year on marketing. The DIY approach using tools alone is viable only in the lowest-competition markets, as it trades out-of-pocket cost for a significant time investment and skill gap.
Local SEO Cost by Business Type: 2026
Competition level and number of locations are the two biggest drivers of local SEO cost, outweighing business size in almost every case. The table below shows typical monthly investment ranges by business type.
| Business Type | Typical Monthly Investment | Primary Strategy Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Single location, low competition | $500 to $1,000 | GBP optimization, citation consistency across 20+ directories |
| Single location, moderate competition | $1,000 to $2,000 | Content creation, review management, and local link building |
| Single location, high competition (legal, medical, financial) | $2,000 to $3,500 | Aggressive content production, competitor gap analysis, and authority building |
| Multi-location (2 to 5 locations) | $2,500 to $5,000 | Per-location GBP management, unified content strategy, location page optimization |
| Multi-location (5 or more locations) | $5,000+ | Enterprise-level management, location-specific reporting, franchise SEO |
The data reveals that competition level is the single biggest driver of local SEO cost in every market. A small law firm in a major metro area will typically spend more on local SEO than a mid-sized home services business in a suburban market, because attorney and medical search terms attract significantly more competition at the local level. The most common scenario for a small business engaging a local SEO provider for the first time is a single-location business in a moderately competitive market investing $1,000 to $2,000 per month.
What Is Included in Local SEO Services by Price Range: 2026
Local SEO pricing correlates directly with the scope of services delivered. The table below shows what a business should expect to receive at each monthly investment level.
| Monthly Investment | Included Services |
|---|---|
| Under $500 | Google Business Profile optimization |
| $500 to $1,000 | GBP management and on-page SEO optimization |
| $1,000 to $2,000 | GBP management, on-page optimization, and local content creation |
| $2,000 to $3,000 | Full strategy including competitor analysis, technical audit, keyword research, strategic plan, and AI search optimization |
| $3,500+ | All of the above plus multi-location GBP management, location page creation, and a dedicated account manager |
The data reveals that the $2,000 to $3,000 range is where local SEO transitions from execution work to strategic work. Below that threshold, campaigns focus on individual deliverables such as content or profile management without a formal strategy, keyword framework, or competitive analysis to guide them. Businesses that invest at this level or above receive a structured foundation that determines which keywords to target, where competitors are winning, and how to position the business for visibility in both traditional and AI search. The $3,500 and above tier is designed specifically for multi-location businesses, where the complexity of managing separate GBP profiles, location pages, and location-specific strategies requires a dedicated point of contact.
Local SEO Return on Investment: 2026
Local SEO has an average 3-year cumulative ROI of 300% for small businesses, with most campaigns reaching break-even between month 6 and month 10. The chart and table below show how ROI compounds across a 36-month investment period.
The Average Cumulative Local SEO ROI: Months 3 to 36
| Month | Average Cumulative Local SEO ROI |
|---|---|
| Month 3 | -80% |
| Month 6 | -20% |
| Month 8 | 0% (break-even) |
| Month 10 | 28% |
| Month 12 | 80% |
| Month 14 | 98% |
| Month 16 | 118% |
| Month 18 | 136% |
| Month 20 | 152% |
| Month 24 | 180% |
| Month 28 | 218% |
| Month 32 | 258% |
| Month 36 | 300%+ |
The data reveals that local SEO ROI follows a consistent S-curve pattern across most small business campaigns. Returns are negative in the early months as investment accumulates before keyword rankings and lead flow establish themselves. Most campaigns break even between month 6 and month 10, after which returns compound steadily as content authority builds, citation signals strengthen, and the business accumulates reviews that improve AI search visibility. Businesses investing for 24 or more months achieve 3.2 times the average return of first-year adopters, which is why campaigns abandoned before month 12 most commonly show no ROI despite being on a trajectory that would have paid off within the year. The 300% average 3-year ROI means a business investing $1,500 per month ($54,000 over 3 years) can expect to generate $162,000 or more in net revenue attributable to local SEO over the same period.
